Lucky's Tale for the Oculus Rift.

Virtual reality is finally putting players into video game worlds, and one of the best early examples of this is an Oculus Rift launch game that plays a whole lot like classic games you remember from Nintendo 64.

Lucky’s Tale is out now for Oculus VR’s head-mounted display, and we are enjoying our time with it. Unlike most early virtual experiences for either Rift or competing devices like HTC’s Vive, Lucky’s Tale is a game where you aren’t looking through the characters eyes. Instead, you have the kind of view that a kid has when they play with their toys. Surprisingly, this is still immersive. It’s like if you were able to sit in the world of Super Mario 64 while controlling Nintendo’s Italian plumber instead of having to look at him through the window of your television.

Tech adviser Digi-Capital is predicting VR could grow into a $30 billion industry by 2020, and it’s games like Lucky’s Tale that make that seen plausible. By feeling like you’re in the world, developer Playful has removed one of the biggest barriers to getting into these kinds of platforming releases: you don’t have to think about the camera. Instead, you look around the way you do in the physical world by moving your head. This could open up games to an entirely new audience that could understand moving a character around but could never quite get a grasp of also controlling a camera with an analog stick on a gamepad.

If you’re curious about the game, why don’t you watch us play it in the video below:
